How is Iranian cinema influenced by political repression and political turmoil in Iran?

Persian cinema, as Ali explained is heavily censored in Iran. I feel like, from my experience of visiting the country and meeting the citizens of the country, that this political turmoil and repression has proved to have a catalytic rather than subduing effect in Persian cinema; arts & culture there flourish there almost because of this rather than despite it. Examples of powerful role models in that field are Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis inspired by her graphic novel) and Shirin Neshat.
