How is iron turned into steel?
Raw iron is put into a special furnace. Oxygen is blown through the bottom of the furnace so the fire gets super hot, melting the iron. Carbon (coal, usually) is also added at the bottom and the fire gets even hotter. The carbon from the coal is enfused in with the iron to make steel. For other types of steels, small amounts of other metals are added with the coal and oxygen to the molten mixture (vanadium, nickel, chromium, etc.) The giant furnace pot can be moved with big overhead cranes, so when it is molten it can be poured out into molds to make useful things. .
