How is maternal listeriosis acquired?
Maternal infection is usually acquired from ingestion of contaminated foods. Certain foods are known to be higher risk than others, and the fact that the organism can grow at 4 degrees Celcius (common refrigeration temperature) is important. Foods that are known to be relatively high risk are certain dairy foods (soft cheeses), pates, soft serve ice cream and mass produced deli type coleslaws.
