How is mitosis different from meiosis?
Mitosis is the process of division of a body cell. Every cell in the body goes through mitosis. In mitosis, all of the cellular material (the DNA) is copied. The copies are sent to opposite ends of the cell as the cell is dividing so one copy of the DNA ends up in each cell after it has divided. Meiosis is the process of division of a sex cell. The ending cells have HALF the genetic material which is 23 chromosomes. So when sperm and egg combine, the baby will have 46 chromosomes. Meiosis is what generates sperm in males and eggs in females. Meiosis takes your genetic material of all of your genes that your parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and so on have given to you and puts them in a cell and divides. Genes during meiosis can rearrange durring a process known as crossing over. This is what causes genetic variation. 4 sperm are generated during meiosis in men and only one egg is generated during meiosis in women. The actual processes are the same when it comes to division, b
