How is the RNS™ System implanted?
The system is implanted by a neurosurgeon during a two- to five-hour procedure. One or more scalp incisions are made. A craniectomy sized to precisely fit the device is made. The leads may be placed through the craniectomy or through a small burr hole in the skull. Two to four leads are implanted (but not more than four). Depth leads, subdural strip leads—or a combination thereof—are placed near the seizure focus. Then the neurostimulator is placed within the craniectomy. Two leads can be connected to the RNS neurostimulator so that one or two seizure focuses can be monitored. Typically, participants remain in the hospital for one to three days after the surgical procedure. Participants receive routine post-craniectomy follow-up by the study neurosurgeon.
