How likely is it that 2 people can have the sickle cell trait?

0

One in 12 African Americans carry the sickle cell trait. In some parts of Africa the rate of sickle cell trait is as high as 25%. Having one sickle cell gene (trait) helps protect against malaria. Therefore, in areas where malaria is more common, the trait is more common. Since most carriers have normal blood counts, only a special test, called a “hemoglobin electrophoresis” indicates whether you have sickle trait. I’m not sure where you live, but the Sickle Cell Foundation in Florida offers free screening to anyone who is worried about whether or not they carry the disease. I don’t know if they provide this only locally or all over the country, but if you contact them they can probably either help you or point you towards an organization in your area. I added a link in the sources below. Good luck, and I hope all goes well!
