How many coats are required?
The number of coats varies depending upon the boat condition, but the general rule-of-thumb is “shine + 4” , meaning apply four more coats after you get a shine. In general, it takes 1-2 coats to get a shine but this figure depends upon the condition of your gel coat. Older or heavily-oxidized gel coat tends to be rather porous and consequently absorbs more coats of the sealer before a shine appears. Of course, the more shiny coats you apply the longer Vertglas will last. Since each coat dries crystal clear in about a minute, applying extra coats is very easy.
