How many known prehistoric extinct species are there?
The number of described fossil species is in the hundreds of thousands. The Paleobiology Database lists 120641 described taxa, and most of these are Genera – many of these Genera have several described species under each one. The number of described species is likely a tiny, tiny fraction of the total number of species that actually existed.
