How many letters of recommendation are required?
For the Ph.D. program 3 letters are required. For the M.S.M.E. program letters are not required, but highly recommended especially if you are seeking financial assistance. I have a B.S. in engineering. Can I apply to the Ph.D. program directly? You may apply directly to the Ph.D. program, or you can apply to the M.S.M.E. program. Applicants who already hold an M.S. degree from another institution should apply directly to the Ph.D. program.
Most schools will request either one or two recommendation letters. If letters are not required, it is still beneficial to submit them. The easiest way to submit letters to schools is to use the optional letter of recommendation service provided by the LSDAS, which will handle up to three letters.
We recommend three to five letters of recommendation from individuals who know the candidate well and who are in a capacity to judge the student’s performance objectively (no family members or friends of family). At least two letters should be from science or research advisors. A premedical committee evaluation will be considered in lieu of the three to five letters required. Letters of recommendation are considered critical to the decision-making process. Confidential letters are highly preferred, and a specific statement that a student is in good standing is also preferred. Commentary on any institutional action taken is desirable, when applicable. It is acceptable to send your letters before your AMCAS application is received, but please make sure your recommenders include both your name and AAMC ID number in each letter. Please keep in mind that your file will not be considered complete until all letters have been received by the Admissions Committee.
You must submit at least two recommendation letters with your Pharm.D. application. A maximum of four letters will be accepted. Letters must be submitted directly to PharmCAS and received by the application deadline. Visit pharmcas.org for details. Letters submitted directly to OSU will not be accepted.
