How many proxy servers are there?

0

A. There are currently (October 2007) two servers, named abdn003.abdn.ac.uk and abdn004.abdn.ac.uk. In order for the actual hardware to be replaced or updated at will, these two machines have been given DNS aliases (technically cnames) of proxy0.abdn.ac.uk and proxy1.abdn.ac.uk. In addition, they are linked by a network “switch” that automatically switches between them should one proxy fail. This switch has an alias of proxy.abdn.ac.uk (and a real name of px.abdn.ac.uk). When specifying a proxy server, the preference is to choose to use proxy.abdn.ac.uk.
