Depends on who you work for. Sometimes the trainee will make nothing. Try to get a job at the assessors office with the County–experience like that will certainly be paid (and with good benefits). If you are just starting along this career path I must warn you: right now is the worst time to be an appraiser. With the housing market the way it is (crashing) there just isn’t a lot of money in the appraisal business (even when you are appraising for bank foreclosures). In fact I have seen several appraisal shops downsize or fold altogether. If you work under an appraiser then a trainee will generally make 50% of the appraisal fee, per appraisal. But this is NOT standard. Appraisers can set up any kind of contract with you that they want to. If you are in California, find somebody who will train you BEFORE you do the classes and take the state test. A new state law was passed saying that CA appraisers can only mentor one appraiser at a time…
