How much pressure was there with an ‘r’ rating verses the ‘PG-13’?
Nolan: None really. I knew several years ago that it was going to have to be ‘PG-13’ so the way in which we made the film was very specifically crafted to achieve intensity more through the possibility of horror if you will, through the things that are happening off camera, and the threat of things that might happen. There was a judicious use of off screen violence and bloodless violence. We are always helped by the fact that Batman, of all the summer movie heroes, he’s the one who will not kill people. He will not use a firearm. That places certain restrictions on the story telling, but it makes it take things in a more interesting direction. Aaron is amazing in this film too.
