How often are political districts redrawn?
The boundaries of congressional and legislative political districts are redrawn in a process called redistricting that happens every ten years, following the release of updated U.S. Census figures. Typically redistricting for U.S. House of Representatives, State Assembly and State Senate districts is conducted by the state legislature, but occasionally the courts have become involved in reconfiguring political districts. For more information about redistricting, read the Center for Voting & Democracy’s Public Interest Guide to Redistricting.
