Since Subversion is an open source project with distribution coming from multiple sources, there is no real way to determine its exact usage numbers. No one has to obtain a license or pay a fee so there is not strict accounting of use. For solid numbers, we do have an idea how many publicly accessible Apache servers are reporting the presence of the Subversion server module. We track that right here on openCollabNet.
