How should Pimozide be used?
Pimozide comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken with or without food once a day at bedtime or twice a day. To help you remember to take pimozide, take it around the same time every day. Your doctor will probably start you on a low dose of pimozide and gradually increase your dose, not more than once 2 or 3 days. Pimozide controls Tourette’s disorder but does not cure it. It may take some time before you feel the full benefit of pimozide. Pimozide is an orally active antipsychotic drug product which shares with other antipsychotics the ability to blockade dopaminergic receptors on neurons in the central nervous system. However, receptor blockade is often accompanied by a series of secondary alterations in central dopamine metabolism and function which may contribute to both pimozide’s therapeutic and untoward effects.
