How to build a retaining wall with brick?

0

Not sure brick is the best method, unless you’re using concrete block behind it, in which case, it would be considered a block retaining wall. There is simply no way brick is strong enough to withstand pressure from the backfill. It may work in the shortterm, but over a period of four seasons, it’ll blow out, and if there was mortar involved, the mortar will crack and chip out. If you do insist on using brick only, i would use what’s called a double-brick wall. First, using poured concrete, create a grade beam (a run of concrete to serve as the base). Build one wall, using mortar, to be the inside of the retaining wall, and another wall, using mortar, to be the outside wall (to be seen). the walls should face-to-face measure 8″. This will allow an occasional brick to be turned sideways, spanning across both walls, interlocking the two. This turned brick should occur frequently. After the walls are erected, fill the gap with concrete or mortar. This is no guarantee. This is not the idea
