How to do maximum height problems in physics?
The ball will travel in a parabola, which means it spends half its time going up, and half its time going down. So this is the same as asking from what height you must drop a baseball for it to take 2.785 seconds (5.57 divided by two) to hit the ground. Keep in mind that at the top of its flight, the ball has zero vertical velocity (even though it is still moving horizontally, we only care about vertical movement). Use the formula d = v*t + 1/2 at^2 where d is the distance traveled, v is the initial velocity, a is the acceleration, and t is the time. So, plugging in some numbers: d = 0*t + 1/2 (9.8)(2.785^2) d = 38 m So the ball will reach 38 meters high.
