Use the biggest pots you can get, and grow what the seed companies call ‘patio veg’ they are specially bred to grow in pots. the most important thing to remember will be loads of water when they get big and regular feeding as they will soon use all the feed in the compost. If it is really your first time I would suggest tumbling tomatoes and courgettes – buy plants – and from seed try french beans, spinach, lettuce, cabbage for the winter. Root vegetables are much harder in pots except what they call ‘first early’ potatoes, they are the tiny new ones you get in June and can be grown easily in a big pot, I always pot some up for my parents patio (two potatoes per pot), when I plant my veg plot and they get about 30 potatoes from a 14 inch diameter pot.
