With my experience, I do in front of my face and sometime at a higher angle.

If you’re taking a selfie shot, take it from an upward-side angle, and if you can manipulate the light around you, avoid shining it down on your face as it would project a larger shadow over the nose.

If you’re taking a portrait shot, emphasise on the person to keep their chin down, and turn their head to the side.

To distort a huge face we tilt towards a particular side while taking selfies … Similarly holding the camera at a angle tilted to the side of the nose that you don’t want to be prominently highlighted on should do the trick .
