How Was The Great Wall of China Defended?
Great Wall (original photo by Exfordy per this license) The Great Wall of China was defended primarily by archers. Since it was too expensive to keep the Wall perpetually manned, sentries along the length of the walls in use served to warn against impending invasions. The Great Wall could not defend against all invaders, of course – some just chose to scale the wall. However, it was next to impossible to bring horses in or heavy / bulky stolen goods out.
