Montezuma II, a fundamentalist priest before becoming emperor, was mentally ill and thought that Cortes and his men were gods and let them into the city. Contrary to popular belief, most of the Native Americans and Aztecs knew that the Europeans were not gods, but Montezuma did believe it. After letting Cortes and his men into the city, he let them sleep in the royal palace where they found a secret room filled with gold. Cortes and his men attacked the royal guards after this discovery. Montezuma was subjugated quickly, but was allowed to rule as a puppet/figurehead. Later, the Spanish came upon one of the large Aztec human sacrificial ceremonies. They were disgusted and attacked them. The people partaking in the ceremonies were elite people in the city, so this started a small civil war. Montezuma was put outside to quiet everyone down, but his own people stoned him.
