Volcanic Activity The Caribbean region is very unique in that it has over 7000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. The islands of the Caribbean vary in geological formation. Islands such as Aruba, Bahamas, Barbados and the Cayman Islands are all flat non-volcanic formations. Virgin Islands, Cuba, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Saint Kitts and many other islands are made up of large rugged mountains formed by volcanic activity. It is also said that the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean lies just on the fringe of the Caribbean Sea just north of Puerto Rico.
