Well…there are lots of different communication delays and lots of different ways to communicate with children who have these delays. The most broad spectrum approach would be through something called picture exchange. There is an actual certified system called PECS (picture exchange communication system) that is common among children with autism or other developmental disorders that impede communication. It would take me literally forever to explain the detailed process for you, but you help a child to recognize that pictures represent tangible things. Through that, children then can ask or request those items. From there it moves on to actions, feelings, etc. until they can form sentences down the road.
