I am taking Yaz BC and think I may be pregnant. I am worried about birth defects.?

Well if you ARE pregnant, that makes 2 of us. I’m now 16 weeks along with baby number 5 – conceived while faithfully taking Yaz. Of course, I had no idea that I WAS pregnant, and kept taking the pill without realizing that I was. When I found out that I was pregnant, I had stopped in for regular blood draws and thought that my physician was joking with me. My first response (well my second response, my first was “yeah right!”) was questions about the side effects from the Yaz. He told me that birth defects ARE a possibility, but detecting the pregnancy as early as possible is always a good thing. So…if you think you ARE pregnant, I’d stop taking the pill and schedule an appt for a blood screen. (Of course use a back up method of birth control while you’re waiting, just in case you aren’t). I can’t really speak much for the odds, as I became pregnant on the exact same birth control…but finding out early is the BEST option for both you and baby. Good luck…keep us posted!

I continued taking the pill for the first few weeks of my pregnancy. My doctor said not to worry. I would stop taking it and use a back up method until you find out for sure.

My mother in law had my husband while she was on BC. She said that he was born with large genitals (like they were swollen) but went back to normal. I’m sure everything will be fine. Just start taking prenatal vitamins right away. Either take a pregnancy test to confirm or go to the doctor to find out for sure. You may be worrying for nothing.

No I wouldn’t worry about what has already been done. If you really do think you may be pregnant, then stop taking them until you find out for sure.

I would call your GYN for a blood test, but all forms of birth control give you some pregnancy symptoms because they trick your body in to thinking it’s pregnant. The symptoms usually wear off in about 3 months. But getting a blood test is relatively cheap and would put your mind at ease. Good luck to you!
