If you run out of food you should not feed the fish at all. Your fish can go a very long time without food without starving – they are cold blooded creatures and designed this way. A day or two or three without food is nothing at all to a fish, and it’s much healthier to just let the fish go without then to start substituting products that are not very good for the fish and can mess up your tank. Many more experienced fish keepers even only feed their fish a few times per week and not every day. And crackers have nothing to do with what they eat and is not a good substitute, and nor is rice or anything like that. Veggies are an ok alternative, as long as you feed in a way that doesn’t mess up your water.

Other goldfish treats: Peas – Peas are a great supplement to your goldfish’s diet. They help keep their digestion moving along. I like to treat my goldfish to peas once or twice a week. Frozen peas are the best. Nuke them in the microwave for a few seconds to defrost them and squeeze the shell off the pea before feeding them to your fish.
