I saw a funny little color TV at a thrift store– how can I tell if its a PortaColor?
GE PortaColor sets are pretty easy to spot if you’ve seen one, as they all have that distinctive “gee-this-TV-looks-too-wide-for-its-screen-size” look. Earlier models are even easier to identify as such, since they even say “Porta-Color” somewhere on the front or top of the set. GE tried to ‘disguise’ the sets a bit more in the later years, but, as far as I know, all Porta-Color line sets have the following in common: • The screen has a viewable diagonal of about 10″. If it’s a 13″ color TV, it’s not a PortaColor. • With the partial exception of clock-timer models, there are five small control knobs on the front panel [off-on-volume, brightness, vert. hold, color, and tint]. Some of these controls may be hidden slightly (as on the later models), but there will still be a total of five of them, and there are no hinged doors or removable hatches to conceal any of them.
