In watching many Electronic Emissary projects unfold, the EE’s director and facilitators have realized that successful collaborative project work online is (metaphorically) very much like weaving a piece of fabric. The project’s design and logistical planning form the “warp and weft” of the project, which, when complete, or “woven,” can be used as raw material to create useful things (authentic, transferable learning). Students, mentors, and teachers “weave” projects as they engage in project-related communications, using a variety of specialized “widgets,” or techniques, to ensure the projects’ success. Interestingly, the threads of woven material are interdependent, as are the members of an Electronic Emissary project team and their respective actions – all must be collaborating productively if the quality of the material (the project-related learning) is to be demonstrated in its strength, texture, pattern, and beauty.
