School bus sizes are identified in terms of passenger capacity. The buses in Hernando County are 65 passengers, 77 passengers, and 78 passengers. This is calculated in accordance with the National Standards for School Buses that allows three students per 39-inch bench seat. When possible, we try to limit high school and middle school students to two students on most of the bus. During the early months of the school year the high school buses are fuller than later. As students obtain their drivers license, the numbers on the high school buses drop off. Our operators are trained to radio the office to inform us anytime the bus reaches capacity. They do not drive a bus that is over capacity. When over capacity issues occur on a route on a regular basis, the route will be adjusted to accommodate the situation. We attempt to make these adjustments within a week.
