A. The Tennessee Chapter of NASW supported legislation in 2008 to enact Multi-level Social Work Licensure. This legislation was passed by the Tennessee Senate and House of Representatives and a signing ceremony with the Governor occurred on July 1, 2008. Additional information on the new legislation is in the sidebar to the right of this page. New state rules and regulations must be written and approved prior to the liceneses for baccalaureate social workers and advanced practice (non-clinical) soocial workers being issued. Temporary rules are currently being worked on by the State to allow the issuance of new licenses as soon as possible. A public hearing will be held on the temporary rules prior to their implementation as the permanent rules. The following information outlines the social work licensure process that will remain in place pending the development and approval of the rules and regulations to implement the new law.
