If Churchill was a descendant of the Duke of Marlborough, why was he called Winston ?
The Duke of Marlborough was John Churchill – died 1722. One of Marlborough’s daughters married a Spencer – specifically Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland. Closer ancestors included his paternal grandfather, John Winston Churchill (1822 -1883) and his maternal grandfather Leonard Jacobson/Jerome (died in 1891). So baby Winston in 1874 was named “Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill.” An interesting side note is that Sir Winston’s father Randolph died in 1892 – from tertiary syphilis infecting his brain. Mother Jennie Jacobson/Jerome Churchill, who was an American citizen born in Brooklyn, lived until 1921.
