Our very concept of education is changing rapidly. With the proliferation of educational alternatives such as homeschooling and online classes, the concept of public schools may seem increasingly less appealing as time goes by. It seems doubtful that there would be a sudden lack of students going to school in the short term if compulsory education were abolished. There’s no reason to think that the number of students not going to school would be higher than the current drop-out rate. But perhaps it’s time we faced the fact that 12 years of education is simply not good for everyone. With so many 13- and 14-year-olds already possessing the necessary skills to start their own businesses or do computer work for companies, perhaps our traditional way of looking at education and the number of years “necessary” should be re-evaluated.
