If white composite fillings cost more than amalgams and don’t last longer, why do people get them?

They look better. Also, some people just don’t want the amalgams which have silver and mercury in them (as well as other materials). The American Dental Association does not feel that this is a reason to choose the white fillings. Based on current knowledge, if I were a patient, I would choose the restorative material based on cost, looks, and professional recommendation.
