I’m planning on buying a used 2001 Chrysler Sebring LX with the 2.4L I4 engine, with 69k miles on it. I’ve heard horror stories about the 2.7L V6 engine, but I haven’t heard much about the 2.4L, are they a lot more reliable? A: 2.4’s are very reliable engines with very few problems. The first 2.7’s had serious problems with getting sludge if oil wasn’t changed religuosly at 3000 miles. However, some Toyota engines also had the exact same problems in some of their engines with getting sludge. (I won’t forget to mention that VW also had a lot of problems with sludge in their engines, just for fairness sake.) In fact, if you google “toyota engine sludge”, you will get a whole lot more results than what “chrysler engine sludge” pulls up. The sludge issue is just one of the many reasons Consumer Reports downgraded Toyota’s rankings recently.
