All DVD discs are encoded with some form of Dolby Digital as part of the soundtrack format. This does not always mean that you will hear 5.1 channels of audio. Some discs are encoded in 5.1 channels, some in Dolby Pro-Logic, some in 2 channel, and some even in monaural. So, even though the disc says Dolby Digital, it does not necessarily mean 5.1 channels were originally recorded. Some disc jackets identify the number of channels, some will not. Even on DVD discs recorded with DTS 5.1 audio tracks, there will still be some form of Dolby Digital audio available on that disc. Many discs offer a menu to select the playback format. If you know that the DVD disc you are playing is in fact a disc recorded in 5.1 channel surround, yet the receiver or decoder is only indicating “Dolby Pro-Logic”, there may be some settings or connections that are not properly made. First, confirm that your digital connection (optical or coaxial) is securely made between your DVD player and 5.
