In Reply to: Can Scout II axles fit in a 800 Scout?
We’ve had several questions on this same topic recently (see “800a Axles” below), so I looked into it a bit. The word I got is as follows: Scout II Dana 44 axles are only about an inch wider on each side than the stock Scout 80/800 axles. Several folks have swapped them in without any narrowing, and the result is not unattractive. In fact, the difference is barely discernable unless you kneel down & sight along the side of the truck. (The Scout II is actually a tad wider up front than in back.) As for the attachment points, the Scout 80/800 frame is wider up front than a Scout II. One must therefore move the mounting perches on the axle tube OUTBOARD just a bit. The driver’s side spring perch is pretty straightforward — just knock it off & re-attach in the new location. On the passenger side, one needs to re-drill the indexing hole where the spring center-pin sits 3/4″ to the outside of its stock location.
