Is a Maine Coon alright if always kept indoors?
Hey I wouldn’t say that though Maine Coons were originally bred to be outdoor cats. Gradually, they moved indoors due to their value as a working breed who kept homes and barns rodent-free. I still think that any animal should sometimes get outdoors since it is a predator and like any other predator it must hunt more precisely he must keep himself in good shape it is a kind of natural training. If there is no such opportunity then it is necessary to create such conditions for it which will imitate him such conditions and create a good motor activity and will keep it’s body in fit. For this there are special maine coon cat trees which are perfect for this purpose, this is just what you need not just Maine coons, but any cat that does not live outdoor.
I would much prefer my kittens to go to ONLY indoor homes. The Maine Coon is a natural breed of cat, very active and curious. I have to be honest, of my kittens that I know have been let to wander outdoors, their life span is very short………….a sad fact! There is just so much traffic, stray cats willing to fight who may carry disease, snakes, and I am sure we can all think of many other dangers out there, including dogs who will not tolerate a cat. The Maine Coon will try and befriend any animal……..so think if he comes across one of these dogs. Okay, this is a bit of a sore point with me, in Dec 07 I had several kittens go to homes that could not understand how a cat could be content being inside…………..so they let them out, (as I have since found out) now out of 5 of these I know 3 have now ended their very short journey i life……………all well under 12 mths old. My cats do not go outside…………..I have a couple who think they want it……………otherwise
