Is age and experience better than youth and innocence?
Helen Doran (Geology & Geophysics) Mass transfer of fluids in sedimentary basins Under the process of diagenesis minerals present within a sediment which experience an influx of pore fluids undersaturated with respect to the main mineral phase present, may dissolve. If dissolution occurs one of three things may happen to the dissolved matter: • The material may diffuse into adjacent sediments e.g. mudrocks. • The material may travel in solution with pore fluids to an overlying aquifer. • The material may be retained within the sandstone body in which it dissolved. One of the most susceptible minerals to dissolution is K-feldspar and elements which, may be released into solution include Al and K. This project will attempt to quantify the amounts of feldspar dissolution within a sedimentary formation within the Central North Sea. Enabling us to determine the mass transfer of material from dissolution to precipitation. The hypothesis for this work is based on previous work by Wilkinson et
