No not all. Courses in medical school cover a lot of different specialties and it’s not until your second year as a foundation doctor (after 6 years of training) that you apply for a speciality, so in your case, surgery. You have to prove that you will be able to work hard and be commited to all areas of medicine whilst you’re at university, not just that which you’re interested in. You basically need to get really good results at GCSE as you need to be academically excellent to get into medical school. It’s not important because the university course and training will cover all the skills you need to be a paediatric surgeon. It’s better to have more academically rigorous GCSEs, such as the sciences…languages…English etc… as they prove you are intelligent and able to work hard. I’d recommend not choosing it and going for the more academic subjects as they will give you a far better chance of getting into medical school.
