DBT technology has been advertised to improve on some of the inherent limitations of 2D mammography by increasing the sensitivity and specificity of mammography. The success of DBT in the mammography marketplace will be dependent on various factors and it must overcome several hurdles including but not limited to proven efficacy throughout the clinical trials, acceptance by healthcare providers and their patients, and favorable reimbursement rates. If the path from 2D digital mammography to DBT resembles that of film-screen mammography to digital mammography, the sky is the only limit with this emerging technology that is most likely in the pipeline.
