Is diesel the same as home heating oil?
Diesel fuel is generally termed #2 oil which is similar to home heating oil (although some water heaters us #1 oil). The modern diesels are very sensitive to the Cetane rating which must be over 40. They must by law and design be operated using ultra low sulfer diesel fuel. Home heating oil is similar to what is sold at rural fuel stations as “off road diesel”. It is suitable for older construction equipment and older tractors, but should not be used in modern trucks or tractors sold within the past few years. Using it can seriously damage the engine and void the warranty.
