Is GAIL looking at augmenting gas availability Meghalaya and other North Eastern states?
Exploration and production in the North East is done by ONGC. We have only marketing operations in Tripura and Assam. We would only be laying a five to six kilometre long pipeline in Tripura for transporting natural gas from ONGC’s gas field. So, we would be setting up a station near Agartala town and begin building the distribution network covering the station and the households. GAIL has been working in Tripura since 1991-92 and so far we have laid pipelines aggregating to 54 kilometres and these are mainly for transportation of natural gas from various producing fields of ONGC. So far, total investments have been about Rs 41 crore. Due to GAIL’s presence in the state, gas supply has risen from 0.33 million metric standard cubic metres per day to 1.0 million metric standard cubic metres per day. GAIL is foraying into telecom.
