Is it normal to have excessive swelling after arthroscopic knee surgery?

I had arthroscopic surgery on 8/31 and have not fully recovered. I was on crutches for almost four weeks and have been going to physical therapy twice a week. The therapy seems to help, however, I’m unable to walk or stand for prolonged periods and I don’t have a normal gait. This is frustrating since I’ve heard that most people resume their normal activities within about six weeks. I told my therapist about my concerns and he says that I shouldn’t worry about it. He believes that I’m progressing. My knee is more flexible and I can pedal comfortably on the stationary bicycle. He says that each person’s recovery varies. I know that this is a frustrating experience. Initially, I had a great deal of swelling on my knee. The opposite knee was also beginning to feel some discomfort. This was due to it compensating for the weakness in the other knee. I rested my knee as much as possible by keeping it elevated and applied ice as needed.
