Medically, PAS is a form of emotional child abuse. Parents in hostile separations typically suffer depression, anger, and aggression. The expression of these feelings takes on the form of withdrawing love and communication and extends to the children via the custodial parent. Legally, PAS is recognised as a behaviour pattern but often goes under other names such as ‘coaching’, ‘prejudicing’, ‘rehearsing’ and other synonyms for brainwashing. Some courts will act upon it, but do so by simply ignoring the mother’s version of ‘the child’s wishes’ and indicating that she is being obstructive. The more enlightened courts will order family therapy, and ensure that access rights are kept. Anyone experiencing PAS should always look to family therapy as a way forward.
