Is it ok to feed adult bearded dragons live mice?
Nowadays, it is not recommended to feed mice to a beardie. They are designed to digest insects, not bones and skin and organs from mammals. Pinkies are an impaction risk, and long term feeding can also lead to Fatty Liver Disease. Years ago, people(esp. breeders) commonly fed their beardies pinkies to put on weight from being gravid or being undernourished for whatever reason. But now, there are SO many feeder bugs that are readily available that weren’t back then, so why take the risk? The people who still recommend this practice just haven’t caught up with modern knowledge about beardie care. If you want a fattening bug, waxworms are great, but should be used sparingly. If you just want a good treat for your beardie, the following bugs make great treats or everyday feeders: hornworms, silkworms, phoenix worms, butter worms, superworms and roaches.
