Is it ok to take the progesterone only pill while breastfeeding?

The problem with using a hormone contraceptive is not that it will leak into your milk and harm the baby. The problem is that they can lower your milk production. The mini-pill and progesterone only pills are less likely to lower your milk supply, but they are also less effective in preventing pregnancy. Also, some women have their supply affected with ANY hormone contraceptive…..like me! Doctors are generally not real familiar with breastfeeding and medication. They can tell you if it will harm the baby, but most don’t know any more than that. My personal reccomendations would be to either: A.) Use the low-dose pill AFTER your baby is older than 6 months. And use condoms or something until then. or B.) Use a non-hormone type of contraception. Non-hormone contraception would include condoms, diaphrams, copper IUD (NOT Mirena), natural family planning, etc….
