Since inline annotations are in a way like any other kind of format (such as bold or italics), when two annotation fields are adjacent, they become merged by the Cocoa text engine. You can place multiple annotations side by side, however, by changing the colours. The shift can be as small as increasing or decreasing one of the RGB values by 1, if you want to keep the colour change invisible. Adjacent annotations example If you have an annotation that you wish to split into two, select the portion you wish to split off, then bring up the Color Picker (Shift-Cmd-C). Select a colour, and you should immediately see the annotation divide. Note that if you have turned on the preference to not colour the text of inline annotations (available in Scrivener > Preferences:Formatting), the background colour rather than the text colour will define the annotation. To split an annotation in this case, you will need to change the colour via the Highlight drop-down in the Format bar or through Format >
