Most definitely. Severe dehydration is a relatively common killer in sport. Basically your body is about 60% water – it varies exactly between individulas, gender and obviosuly recent drinks. Water is necessary for countless biochemical reactions to occur in your body in order to keep you alive. Furthermore, your body is constantly keep within a very narrow temperature range in normal health. It may feel like you are very hot or very cold, but your core (internal) temperature does not very much at all. In order to lose heat when you are too hot e.g. running, you increase your production of sweat (you sweat constantly even when not doing anything). If you are like me, this is a huge amount and if not replaced large quantities of fluid can be lost within a short space of time. Quick experiment – If you weigh yourself very accurately before and after going to the gym or playing sports, without eating or drinking in between, the difference in kg is the amount of fluid you have lost in litr
