Answer Hi John; It is possible to repair a small crack without top removal. But first you must eliminate the cause of that crack. The saddle being made of hard wood expands at a different rate then the soft spruce top. First remove the strings and tailpiece, then remove the saddle and take off a small amount from each end (about 1/32″). This will eliminate the pressure due to the expantion difference. Now to fix the crack, use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of water to the crack. The water will help draw the glue into the crack. I would suggest Titebond III, work it into the crack with your finger tip with a back and forth motion. If the crack is as thin as you say you may not need a clamp at all. With a moist paper towel wipe off the extra glue, the glue will not harm the varnished surface. Let the glue set over night and then reglue the saddle and leave a 1/32″ gap on each side then install strings etc. If you do not feel comfortable doing this repair yourself take it to a lut
