Is john Adams under appreciated for what he did for US Independence?

I don’t think his contributions to American independence are underappreciated. In fact, I almost never hear any substantive discussion about the American Revolution or the Continental Congress without John Adams’s name being mentioned very prominently. I would say that his presidency is underappreciated, though. Since he served in between two of the office’s greatest figures, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, Adams is often overlooked as a President.
