Is maven deploy goal and actually copying of a dependency or artifact jar to remote repository same?

Actually, simply copying the artifact to the repository is not the same as using deploy. The deploy goal will update various metadata files, create the md5 and sha1 checksum files, and can optionally create missing POM files etc along with actually copying the artifact file. So there is a significant difference between the copying the file and using deploy.
